Update: there’s more discussion on hacker news here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6497860
At sendwithus, we operate in the world of transactional email, and while that phrase has many meanings, it’s surprisingly often equated to a very specific event: a payment receipt. It was a real surprise when we started encountering several businesses that failed to send a proper payment receipt, or worse, they send a receipt that was broken on most email clients. Sending good payment emails shouldn’t be difficult, especially since accepting payments isn’t difficult — thanks to Stripe.
Like many developers, we’re huge fans of services that make our lives easier, and I can think of no better example than Stripe. If you’ve ever had to implement PayPal or an “enterprise merchant solution”, you’ll truly appreciate how amazing the Stripe integration process is. So when we began investigating how we could help people send better payment emails, we naturally took a look at what Stripe does.
What we found was that, while Stripe offers very basic payment receipts, they don’t allow for the level of customization that growth-focused marketers need. Further, payment receipts are the only emails that Stripe provides. If you want dunning emails, trial notifications, etc, you need to implement them yourself. This actually makes a lot of sense, since Stripe’s business is payments – not customer messaging – but the result is that most products using Stripe spend months of developer resources building, testing, and maintaining these important messages… or worse, they don’t implement them at all.
This is particularly tragic in the case of dunning emails, which are sent when a payment fails or a credit card is about to expire. Dunning emails alone can be incredibly valuable, both in terms of revenue and customer experience. Patrick Mckenzie speaks strongly about the importance of carefully-crafted and well-monitored dunning emails in his recent newsletter:
For God’s sake, put as much effort into this as you would any other sales channel.
Now, at sendwithus, we deal with amazing marketers who want visibility and control over all forms of customer engagement – payment emails included. Too often we hear complaints about developer resources being stretched too thin to implement a dunning email, or it taking too long to A/B test an upsell in a receipt email. And so with that in mind, we’ve released sendwithus+stripe, an integration that bridges the gap between marketers and the traditionally developer-owned service, Stripe.
With this integration, any Stripe user can connect their Stripe account to sendwithus, customize one of our pre-configured Stripe email templates, and immediately start sending payment receipts, dunning emails, and subscription notifications through their existing email provider (SendGrid, Mailgun, Mandrill, or Amazon SES). We think this is pretty freaking cool, and the best part is there’s no code required; we’ve built it specifically for marketers to own, and developers to never worry about.
We’re launching with these three crucial event notifications, and we’ll be working with our early customers to roll out more events and templates over the coming months.
